Shelly Van Pelt Allen

Shelly Allen’s journey in hairstyling began in Saline, Michigan, where her passion for hair artistry took root at a young age. She entered cosmetology school at 15, setting the stage for a career marked by innovation and national acclaim. Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Shelly graduated from Huron Valley Beauty Academy in 2002 at the age of 18, excelling with a notable 96% on her cosmetology license exam after starting her training at just 16. Her early dedication laid the foundation for a career focused on mastering hairstyling.

After honing her cutting skills at Master Cuts for 4 years, Shelly sought to expand her expertise in color and extensions. She found mentorship under Jesse and Flo Briggs, renowned as the Queen of Color and King of Extensions, at Yellow Strawberry in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Shelly thrived. She traveled extensively across the country, teaching chemical retexturizing techniques and showcasing her skills at conventions, photoshoots, weddings, and fashion shows. Shelly also pioneered the integration of Great Lengths extensions into her repertoire starting in 2007 and mastered photoshoot styling during this period. During her 5-year tenure at Yellow Strawberry, Shelly’s innovative work has been featured in prestigious publications such as the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Sun Sentinel, Gold Coast Magazine, Modern Salon Magazine, and Hairs How. She co-created the S Wave Thermal Set and Caribbean Dream Relaxer, showcasing her expertise on national stages through demonstrations and teaching engagements.

Shelly expanded her expertise under the ownership of Andrew and Luanne Allorro of Tease Fort Lauderdale, fostering lasting relationships within the industry. After 3 years Shelly joined Face 2 Face Studios with owner Lucianne Ungerbuehler. Shelly specialized in styling, coloring, and extensions. She continued to travel nationally, providing her distinctive styling services for photoshoots, fashion shows, and weddings. In 2017, Shelly broadened her footprint by launching a second studio in Los Angeles in partnership with Luci.

In 2020 taking her career to new heights, Shelly assumed ownership of a prominent building, establishing The House of Shelly Van Pelt as a testament to her artistic vision and leadership. Shelly expanded her influence with the opening of The House of VP, further cementing her reputation as a leading figure in the hairstyling industry.

Shelly’s influence extends beyond the salon chair. She has contributed to numerous videos, photo shoots, fashion shows, editorials, and has served as a judge in hair contests, demonstrating her versatility and leadership in the industry.
